Brows That Last: The Importance of Annual Refresh for Microblading

Eyebrow microblading is an incredibly effective and versatile procedure, but, even with the word “permanent” in its name (as in “permanent makeup”), we always remind clients that it is not a one-and-done procedure. Microblading requires an annual touch-up or refresh. The visible pigment will fade over time, as skin cells are constantly being replaced. As such, all clients need periodic touch-ups to maintain that fresh look. The annual touch-ups are also a chance to try a different color or make other adjustments to the brows. At Adorn Cosmetic in Oakland, we advise clients to book their annual refresh appointment 12-18 months after the initial procedure.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

While microbladed brows are often referred to as a permanent tattoo, in fact, it is more accurately called ‘semi-permanent’. The pigment used in microblading endures a shorter time than in traditional tattoos. Typically, you can expect your eyebrow makeup to last between 12 months and 2 years. Every client’s eyebrow process is unique. After the initial healing period of microblading has passed, many factors that can contribute to how fast or slowly the pigment that has been locked into the skin fades over time. We always share the following tips for making your microblading last longer:

  • Do not apply eyebrow makeup too vigorously when you’re brow shaping. Gentle strokes that do not disturb the skin are best.

  • Retinols, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, vitamin C serums, and other acids can be detrimental to the pigment’s integrity. Be careful about using skincare products including lotions, sunscreen, cleansers, and makeup that contain these products. Any products labeled “anti-aging” will contain acids and should not be used on the tattooed brow area.

  • Oily skin types are not as effective at retaining pigment. Overproduction of sebum (skin oil) can undermine the ability of the pigment to adhere to your skin. To compensate, use skincare products designed to reduce oil buildup.

  • When you go out, make sure you are using sunscreen to protect your brows, as well as the rest of your face and neck!

Reasons To Schedule Your Microblading Touch Up

Even for the most fastidious followers of our after-care instructions, there comes a time when a touch-up is needed. Microblading annual touch-ups, also known as maintenance or refresh appointments, are important to keep your microbladed eyebrows looking their best. Here are several reasons to schedule your annual touch-up:

  1. Normal Color Fading: Over time, the pigment used in microblading can fade, especially if it's exposed to sunlight and other environmental factors. An annual touch-up helps refresh the color and maintain vibrancy.

  2. Natural Skin Regeneration: The skin on your face naturally regenerates over time. As new skin cells replace old ones, the microbladed pigment can become less visible. A touch-up helps reintroduce pigment into the new skin layers.

  3. Maintain Definition: Microblading adds definition and structure to your eyebrows. Annual touch-ups help maintain the crisp lines and hair-like strokes that provide this definition.

  4. Skin Changes: Changes in skin texture, elasticity, and oiliness can affect how microbladed pigment holds in the skin. Annual touch-ups can adapt to these changes.

Besides the annual maintenance to increase the longevity of your microbladed eyebrows, an annual touch-up session for microblading can also be a chance to explore a new shape, or experiment with different colors or looks.

  • New Look: If you are ready to say goodbye to your current eyebrow style and want a fresh look, a microblading annual touch-up offers an opportunity for a makeover.

  • Color Change: Perhaps you've decided that you want a different eyebrow color. Microblading allows you to change the color of your eyebrows, and the annual refresh appointment is a perfect time to do that.

What To Expect At Your Annual Refresh Appointment

We enjoy seeing our clients back at our studio for the annual refresh appointment. It’s a chance for us to review the eyebrows together, and hear how much clients love the convenience and look of microbladed eyebrows. When you come in for your annual refresh appointment for microblading, you can expect:

  • Consultation and Assessment: Your permanent makeup artist will start by assessing the current state of your eyebrows and the fading or retention of the pigment from your initial microblading session.

  • Color and Shape Discussion: You will have a discussion with your permanent makeup artist about the color and shape you want for your eyebrows. Any changes or adjustments can be made during this consultation.

  • Numbing Cream Application: A topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

  • Microblading Procedure: Similar to the initial procedure, our expert permanent makeup artist will touch up your eyebrows with our signature technique.

  • Pigment Selection: Your artist will choose a pigment color that matches your eyebrow color or the new color you choose for your annual refresh.

That’s it! Following the aftercare instructions, you will continue enjoying the many benefits of microbladed eyebrows for another 12-18 months until you come back to your next refresh appointment.

Elevating Your Look with Ombre Brow and Other Permanent Makeup Techniques

Hey there, Oakland! Are you ready to elevate your look and rock some fabulous brows? Look no further than Adorn Cosmetic, your go-to spot for permanent makeup in our awesome city. We are all about enhancing your natural beauty with top-notch techniques like Ombre Brow, microblading, and more. Our permanent makeup studio is here to make you feel confident and beautiful. Whether you're a busy professional, an athlete, or someone who simply wants to enhance their natural beauty effortlessly, permanent makeup offers a range of benefits. So, let's dive in and discover how Adorn Cosmetic can take your brow game to the next level.

WHAT IS OMBRE BROW OR POWDER BROW?

Ombre Brow, also known as Powder Brow, is a popular and highly sought-after technique in the world of permanent makeup. This method creates a soft, shaded effect that mimics the appearance of filled-in eyebrows using a gradient of colors. Unlike microblading, which creates hairstrokes with a handheld tool, Ombre Brow involves using a machine and a specialized needle to deposit pigment into the skin. The result is a more defined and polished look that can last for an extended period.

HOW IS OMBRE BROW DIFFERENT FROM MICROBLADING?

One of the significant differences of Ombre Brow is its versatility. Ombre Brow can create a range of effects, from soft and natural-looking brows to more defined and dramatic styles. The shading technique allows for a seamless transition from a lighter color at the front of the brow to a darker shade towards the tail. This gradient effect gives the illusion of fuller, more dimensional eyebrows. Whether you prefer a subtle enhancement or a bolder look, Ombre Brow can be customized to suit your preferences.

Microblading, on the other hand, is a technique that creates hairstrokes to mimic the appearance of natural eyebrow hair. While microblading can be an excellent option for some clients, it may not be suitable for everyone. Microbladed hairstrokes can fade faster on oily skin or skin with larger pores, resulting in less longevity compared to Ombre Brow. Ombre Brow is often preferred by clients who desire a more filled-in, makeup-like finish or have sparse eyebrows that require more coverage.

Updating An Older Microblading Look

Microblading is fast becoming a must-have procedure, and with good reason: you get perfect eyebrows every day, without the effort or skill of applying makeup. With microblading, you can cut ten minutes a day or more out of the time you spend putting on and taking off makeup. And, like most permanent makeup procedures, microblading can last anywhere from 18 months to 5 years. But what happens when you don’t love the shape or color of your microbladed eyebrows? When you work with a permanent makeup professional, there are ways to undo or update your microblading results. At Adorn Permanent Cosmetics, a top microblading studio in Oakland, we specialize in updating previously microbladed eyebrows, to give you the perfect brow you’ve always wanted.

Eyebrow Trends for 2023

Microblading is a commitment, so you want to make sure the style you pick is something you will love for years. According to the Zoe Report, the full eyebrow look is here to stay. The “skinny brow,” the overplucked look many of us remember from the early 2000s, is not coming back any time soon. Social media makeup artists and celebrities often go for the extreme eyebrow trends, such as the glitter brow or the straight-across brow, most people want the best, most flattering version of their own natural brows, filled in for a youthful look and proportioned to suit their bone structure. That is great news for those of us who have committed to the fuller brow with microblading - this is a look and an investment you will not regret.

If you were not so lucky and your microbladed eyebrows are not helping you look and feel your best, we have good news for you, too. Although permanent makeup (otherwise known as semi-permanent makeup, micropigmentation, or makeup tattoo) is a long-term commitment, there are options for updating your look. You don’t have to be stuck with eyebrows you hate.

Common Reasons To Get An Eyebrow Correction

We like to remind our microblading clients that eyebrow microblading should be viewed as a permanent decision — at least one that will last for a few years. With that said, there are many situations when a microblading correction or even removal is needed.

The most common reasons we see clients for a correction for a previously microbladed eyebrow include:

  • Incorrect eyebrow shape

  • Poor color choice

  • Bad color retention

  • Misshapen or asymmetrical brows

  • Poor placement of brow tattoo

  • Unnatural looking results

  • Client simply changed their mind

Whatever the reason you need the eyebrow corrected, you have options. The last thing a professional makeup artist wants is for the client to feel stuck with a poor microblading job for years to come.

What To Do If You Are Not Happy With Microblading

Bad microblading happens. If you find that you are not happy with your microblading results, it might be because you had a poor experience with your technician. Whether they didn’t use the right color or didn’t do a good job of shaping your eyebrows to match your facial features, the end result might not be exactly what you expected.

To correct the eyebrow shape, your brows need to be re-mapped, re-drawn and then approved by you. If the color of the original microblading job was not ideal, we need to discuss how new and different pigment can be applied.

In the more extreme cases, pigment removal is needed. At Adorn, we offer Saline and Glycolic Acid removal methods. These methods work by carefully opening the skin at the site of the tattoo and using saline or glycolic acid to bond with the ink particles, removing the pigment in the same way it was originally implanted..During your consultation we will advise you on the right method for you.

Oakland Microblading for Men

We love microblading, and so do our clients from Oakland and from all over the Bay Area. Microblading is one of the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures, with people of all ages enjoying the benefits of the perfect eyebrow. Microblading can boost your confidence, save time, and can be an easy way to try a new look without a permanent commitment. Permanent makeup such as microblading is a highly effective and convenient option for clients who want to spend less time applying makeup every day. Best of all, microblading is for everyone: men, women, and non-binary individuals.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent tattoo, used to create the look of perfect brows with individual hair strokes using a microblade. If you have fair or uneven brows, allergies that make conventional makeup impossible, hair loss due to aging, chemotherapy, or alopecia, microblading can help you maintain your ideal eyebrow shape and fullness.

The microblading procedure involves a super-fine tool (technically a tightly-clustered bundle of needles) that deposits pigment into skin. The tool creates strokes that closely resemble individual hairs. The procedure provides a semi-permanent effect distinct from standard cosmetic tattoos, which allows clients to change their brow design over time as trends change and the face ages. There is minimal discomfort during the procedure as we use a topical numbing cream before starting the procedure and add additional numbing while completing the brows.

Can Men Get Microblading?

If you are wondering whether men can get microblading, the answer is a resounding yes. Microblading is a gender-neutral procedure, and looking groomed and put-together is equally important to everyone. Men care about their appearance just as much as women, and men of all ages want to look good. We all know how important eyebrows are and how nicely they can frame our faces. Eyebrows have the power to completely change the look of the face by correcting minor flaws such as small eyes or eyes that are too far apart. The right eyebrow shape can frame and flatter the eyes. Well-structured brows that are more symmetrical in nature are pleasing to the human eye.

Eyebrows start to look sparse due to the natural decline of testosterone (in men) and estrogen (in women) that begins in the 40s. Both of these hormones affect the hair growth cycle and the structure of the hair follicles. Eyebrows thin over time as the hair shafts become finer and some of the follicles stop producing hair. So it is not at all unusual that more and more men are opting for eyebrow microblading. Whether you are a man in your 20s, 40s, 60s or beyond, rest assured that microblading is available to you.

Microblading Aftercare for Men

If you are thinking about scheduling microblading for men, you’ll want to plan ahead in order to maximize your results. The longevity of your eyebrows depends on how you take care of them and on your lifestyle. Age and skin type, for both men and women, are some factors in how long the microbladed eyebrows last. To keep your treated eyebrows in their best condition, it’s imperative that you follow the aftercare instructions your microblading artist gave you. These include:

  • Avoid sweating in the brow area in the week or so post-treatment. Intense, sweaty workouts, long hot showers, pools, hot tubs, and saunas should all be avoided during the healing process.

  • Stay out of direct sunlight in the aftermath of your microblading session. It is important that sun exposure is minimized during the healing process, and using SPF on the brows or covering the face with a hat or visor when you are out in the sun will help keep your brows looking fresh.

  • It’s also strongly advised to avoid dyeing brows during the healing process after microblading. Any makeup deposited on the brows can interfere with the skin’s ability to seal in pigment.

  • If you smoke, it is a good idea to abstain for a week or so after your microblading, as chemicals in cigarettes and vapes can affect your skin’s ability to heal effectively.

  • Skin hydration is critical to its healing factor. The more hydrated your skin is, the faster and more effectively it will heal. Drink plenty of water.

Permanent Makeup 101

A close-up of that healed lip-blush 💋

A close-up of that healed lip-blush 💋

Do you find the terms permanent makeup, semi-permanent makeup, cosmetic tattooing, and makeup tattoo confusing? You are not alone - these are questions we are asked on a regular basis. In the world of permanent makeup, procedures can be known by multiple names. We at Adorn Cosmetic are here to demystify the alphabet soup of PMU (permanent makeup) terms and set the record straight.

What is Permanent Makeup?

According to the Society of Permanent Makeup Artists, permanent cosmetic makeup is cosmetic tattooing. The specialized techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as “micropigmentation”, “micropigment implantation” or “dermagraphics”. The cosmetic implantation technique deposits colored pigment into the upper reticular layer of the dermis. In plain English, this means that a pigment is deposited in your skin

Permanent cosmetics procedures are performed using various devices, including the traditional tattoo coil machines, the pen or rotary machine and the non-machine or hand device. The process includes a consultation, the application of pigment, and at least one or more follow-up visits for evaluating the healed design work and color of the pigment.

Permanent makeup is an umbrella term for a whole range of procedures such as:

Eyebrow Microblading

Powder Brows

Permanent Eyeliner

Lip Liner or Lip Blush

Other procedures such as medical tattooing for scar camouflage

What Is Makeup Tattoo?

You may have heard about the term makeup tattoo, which is often used interchangeably with the term permanent makeup. The term makeup tattoo is not a misnomer, since permanent makeup is applied under sterile conditions similar to that of a tattoo. However, when tattooing, the artist uses ink, while permanent makeup uses pigments. Tattoo ink comes in all colors, while permanent makeup uses black pigments, different shades of brown, and shades of pink for lip blushing. Permanent makeup pigments are iron oxides, typically mixed with water and glycerine. Tattoo ink is made up of pigments combined with a carrier and a number of chemicals such as lead, chromium, nickel, titanium dioxide. So while the term “makeup tattoo” is technically accurate, permanent makeup is different from tattoos.

What Is Micropigmentation?

Micropigmentation, also known as permanent makeup, permanent cosmetics or cosmetic tattooing, is a cosmetic procedure used to improve or replace lost coloring on your skin. The procedure is performed with a pen-like instrument or standard tattoo gun. The needle will penetrate a few millimeters into the middle layer of your skin (dermis) and an iron oxide pigment is injected. If this definition of micropigmentation sounds familiar, that is because it matches the definition of permanent makeup.

What is Semi-Permanent Makeup?

If you are wondering what is the difference between permanent and semi-permanent makeup, the answer is None. Semi-permanent makeup is a misnomer. All makeup tattoo procedures are permanent. The visible pigment will fade over time, as skin cells are constantly being replaced. Most permanent makeup procedures last anywhere from 18 months to 5 years. However, you should think about micropigmentation as being permanent because it can be very difficult to remove.

Permanent makeup is a highly effective and convenient option for clients who want to spend less time applying makeup every day. With permanent makeup you can cut ten minutes a day or more out of the time you spend putting on and taking off makeup. It is a popular choice for clients who have fair or uneven brows, allergies which make conventional makeup impossible, hair loss due to aging, chemotherapy, alopecia, or eczema, or vision or other mobility issues that make it hard to apply makeup. A tattoo can mimic eyeliner or lipstick, or it can darken and create the look of thicker eyebrows. It can also camouflage scars and help with the look of an uneven hairline.

Think of Permanent Makeup As Your Forever Look

Permanent makeup, semi-permanent makeup, micropigmentation, or makeup tattoo - whatever term you choose to use, it is important to remember the permanent nature of these procedures. As seamless and easy as it is, you are still making a permanent decision — at least one that will last for a few years. Please realize that before you commit to any pigment or shape for your eyebrows, lash line, or lips.

We encourage you to do research on your provider and make sure that their work is something you would like to keep on your face forever. At Adorn Cosmetic, we share dozens of Before & After photos to help you get an idea of our work. If you have any questions, please schedule a consultation so we can help you make the right permanent makeup decision for your goals.

What does this mean for an Oakland permanent makeup studio? For an average client, permanent makeup can be used to simplify the daily routine, save time, or correct imperfections and flaws. For a client with an artist's vision, the face is also a canvas for a work of art. When our clients have their own vision, we are creatively challenged to help them make their permanent makeup ideas come to life. While working on a client’s face, we develop a close relationship and a sense of trust. We are proud to say, Oakland and the East Bay trust us with their permanent makeup goals.

The diversity of our clientele inspires our creative approach. No two clients are alike, and our permanent makeup professionals always start by listening to what the client has in mind. Are there particular considerations? Does this client want a more dramatic or a more natural look? Is there a special event coming up, which may affect the timeline and aftercare instructions? Whatever the goal, from correcting uneven eyebrows, to creating a unique look that reflects a client’s personality, we enjoy the creative process as much as the technical process of permanent makeup for our East Bay clients. 3 Reasons To Choose Nano Brows

Microblading, nanoblading, nano brows.. If you are confused by the permanent makeup options for your eyebrows, you are not alone. Nano and Microblading are two similar permanent makeup eyebrow procedures, and the end result looks virtually identical. The difference is that nanoblading uses a smaller needle than microblading, emulating the texture, depth and movement of real eyebrow hair. The smaller needle used in nano blading means higher precision and accuracy, allowing for even more natural looking results. We share some of the reasons you may choose Nano Brows over Microblading:

Nanoblading Works On Oily Skin

Normal to dry skin types are perfect candidates for microblading. The microblading procedure involves a super-fine tool, which deposits pigment into skin. The tool creates strokes that closely resemble individual hairs. However, if you have oily skin, microbladed eyebrows have a higher chance of fading or creating blurred strokes over time due to the skin’s high production of oil and absorption of the pigment. With Nano, even a client with oily skin can enjoy crispy natural-looking hair strokes. Soft shading can also be easily layered to mimic density and fuller brows, making this service incredibly customizable for each client. Got oily skin? Choose nano.

Nano Lasts Longer

As compared to microblading, nano blading lasts longer: nanoblading results can last up to 3 years. Nanoblading combines hair stroke and shading techniques to leave your arches looking perfect. Although nanobladingis considered a permanent makeup service, sun exposure, cell turnover, and exfoliation will cause some fading over time. For best results, you’ll need to schedule a touch-up or maintenance treatment after the first year or year and a half. For most clients, nano blading saves time and money, as it requires fewer appointments over time than microblading.  People with skin that is rough and bumpy are also good candidates for nano blading, while microblading may be a problem in this case.

Nano Is Effective on Darker Skin Tones

We are often asked, does microblading or nano work on dark skin? Nano blading works on all skin tones, including darker/ more melanated skin. When the right pigment is selected, Nano blading on darker skin tones creates beautiful, full eyebrows.

At Adorn, we have extensive experience with microblading and nano brows for clients with darker skin. Our experience shows that nano blading is a superior choice for people with dark skin tones. We would also like to share this additional resource about nano blading for people of color. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about nano blading - we will be happy to evaluate the options with you.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

Microblading is a type of semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo procedure which deposits pigment into the skin. It can also be known as micropigmentation and is a specific type of permanent makeup procedure. It’s most commonly used in the brow area, to create natural-looking brow strokes that replicate the look of perfectly sculpted eyebrows without frequent maintenance. Unlike regular tattoos, microblading is a semi-permanent procedure, and the pigment used will fade over time.

Microbladed brows may need to be touched up every 6 to 18 months in order to look their best. However, semi-permanent brows created by microblading can last up to 18-24 months without the need for a touch up in some cases. This range will depend on certain factors, including:

  • Skin type— Very oily skin does not retain the pigment as well as other skin types, and may require more frequent touch ups.

  • Aftercare— Your microblading provider will have specific instructions on how best to care for your skin in the period that your skin is healing after the procedure. Following these instructions will help your skin heal faster. It’s also how to make microblading last longer, since proper aftercare gives the pigment a better chance of bedding in as intended.

  • Sun exposure— Especially in the two week period following having eyebrows microbladed, direct and prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can denature the pigment beneath the skin and cause it to fade more rapidly than is typical. Using sunscreen every day and regularly re-applying sunscreen will help the longevity of your microblading.

  • Smoking— Cigarette smoke (and smoke from similar sources) will impact healing time, inhibiting the ability of the skin to repair effectively.

  • Hydration— Frequent hydration is one of the best things you can do to ensure that your skin is healing correctly and retaining the maximum amount of pigment as it does so.

  • Exfoliation— Aggressive exfoliation methods, such as chemical peels, can affect the pigment beneath the skin. Glycolic acid is actually used to remove semi-permanent cosmetic tattoos such as microblading, as well as being used to treat acne and smooth out facial lines and wrinkles. Be very careful using strong exfoliants around your brow area after microblading.

It is advisable to come in for a touch-up around a month after the initial procedure, to ensure that the hair strokes appear as desired. After this, when the first touch-up is completed, you shouldn’t require any further sessions for at least six months at minimum. Touch-ups for microblading should be done in the same way that root touch-ups are done for hair. If touch-ups are delayed too long the pigment may fade too much for a touch-up to have any useful effect. The outer boundary is usually a year to a year and a half depending on skin type and the factors listed above. In these cases your provider may assess additional costs for a touch up.

Benefits of investing in microblading:

  • More time before you leave the house, since you don't have to spend effort on making your brows look even and natural

  • The confidence boost from always having eyebrows that accentuate your features

  • An effortlessly natural eyebrow look

  • Brows that always look their best, whether first thing in the morning or coming out of the pool or gym

Like microneedling, plasma skin tightening utilizes micro-injuries to produce collagen and elastin. The treatment also lifts and tightens skin, and is excellent for restoring crepe-y skin. It is one of the only treatments that is safe to use on the upper and lower eyelids.

Permanent Cosmetic Procedures for Women Over 60

Why Permanent Cosmetic Procedures for Women Over 60 Make Sense

With permanent makeup options becoming more sophisticated with every year, there’s little to dispute why permanent cosmetic procedures for women over 60 make sense. Adorn Cosmetic offers multiple procedures to help older women feel more confident in their appearances.

What is Microblading?

Put simply, microblading is a cosmetic procedure that embeds eyebrow-colored pigment just under the skin with a fine tool. This process provides an alternative to eyebrow pencils, brow gel, and other products that must be continuously reapplied. The pigment remains for a period between 18 months and 3 years before fading, making this a form of semi-permanent makeup.

How Do Eyebrows Change with Age?

There are many influences on a woman’s appearance that manifest themselves over time. Eyebrows are often overlooked but can have a definite impact. As women get older, changes in hormone production can mean that hair growth cycles abate, meaning that new hair grows in much slower and causes thinning eyebrows. It is rare that this thinning will come in symmetrically, causing additional woes to women trying to balance their faces. As hair turns grey or white, it can lose the lubricating oil it had in younger times, becoming coarser. This again changes the texture of the eyebrow as a whole. Rather than commit to a daily drudge of drawing and re-drawing eyebrows that they can be satisfied with, many women over the age of 60 are instead turning to semi-permanent makeup as an option.

Is There an Age Limit to Microblading?

Because microblading eyebrows involves abrasions of the skin, and due to the decrease in skin elasticity that people experience as they age, it is natural to wonder whether permanent cosmetics such as microblading are appropriate for use on older skin. The truth of the matter is that so long as factors such as the skin’s tone and thickness are taken into account, there is no reason why older clients can’t benefit from microbladed brows.

Everything You Need to Know About Microblading

shutterstock_1405245557.jpg

Microblading is often compared to a cosmetic tattooing procedure. In many ways this is an apt comparison. Both cosmetic tattoos and microblading involve subdermal insertion of pigment. However, there are notable differences.

  • Tattoo ink is designed to be permanent, and will change color over time from dark brown/black to a more blueish tone.

  • In comparison, the type of pigment used in microblading is designed to fade in time but hold its color.

  • Tattooing is performed with a particular machine, and eyebrow tattoos tend to have a more filled-in appearance as a result.

  • Microblading is performed with a hand tool creating individual hair strokes and tends to produce a more natural brow appearance.

Microblading will require an initial treatment followed by one or two follow-ups, to ensure the color implants properly and remains for between twelve months to two years. The procedure should not be particularly uncomfortable as microblade artists will apply numbing cream to the area during their work for the client’s comfort. The procedure is known to not affect oily skin as effectively, though one consequence of the ageing process is that skin tends to dry out. It also means that thick, dramatic brows are generally less effective. Common microblading practice for older women is to create thinner, more delicate brow shapes.

Microblading and similar procedures are proven to boost the confidence of older women who undergo them. Microblading is even popular with celebrities such as Helen Mirren. If you would like to try microblading for yourself, or any of our other permanent cosmetic procedures, you can book a virtual consultation to discuss microblading and how it might work for you.

Eyebrow Microblading After Chemotherapy

Can You Have Microblading After Chemotherapy.jpg

There are so many challenges during cancer treatment, which is why many people dealing with hair loss are trying eyebrow microblading after chemotherapy. Hair loss is an unfortunate and common side effect. While wigs and head wraps are in common use for scalp hair loss, approaches for complete eyebrow loss are less well established. Adorn Cosmetic offers semi permanent makeup for a range of purposes, including supporting cancer survivors or those who are undergoing chemotherapy.

Microblading and Permanent Lash Enhancement for Cancer Patients

Microblading is a form of semi permanent cosmetics that uses hundreds of minute abrasions to create natural looking eyebrow hairs from pigment. Lash line enhancement helps define the eyes for clients who have lost their eyelashes. It can be a significant help to those recovering from breast cancer or other cancers, as it is a semi permanent tattoo and will fade over time as the cancer survivor’s eyebrows grow back in.

Can You Have Microblading After Chemotherapy?

Adorn Cosmetic often fields questions about whether it’s safe to undergo microblading sessions after chemotherapy. While of course people react to chemo in different ways, as a rule of thumb it is a good idea to wait for a couple of weeks from your last chemo treatment before undergoing the procedure, and we request you receive approval from your doctor for the procedure.

Microblading Before or After Chemo

Is it best to receive microblading services before or after chemo? Depending on the type of treatment course you are receiving it may be possible to complete the procedure while you are undergoing chemo. The effects of chemotherapy can change how skin reacts to pigments, and we are happy to provide a free consultation to discuss these factors. Knowing how your body has changed in response to chemo can make it easier to produce an effect that will flatter your face as it is now.

How to Get Lasting Results from Microblading

Make Your Microblading and Permanent Makeup Last Longer!.jpg

If you’ve gone in for permanent eyebrow makeup, you are likely interested in how to get lasting results from microblading. After all, you have made an investment in your appearance, and you’ll want to get your money’s worth. Adorn Cosmetic is staffed by trained professionals that are highly experienced with microblading procedures and other forms of permanent makeup. We have advice that can help you prolong your microbladed eyebrows’ longevity.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

While microbladed brows are often referred to as a permanent tattoo, in fact it is more accurately called ‘semi-permanent’. The pigment used in microblading endures a shorter time than in traditional tattoos. Typically, you can expect your eyebrow makeup to last between 12 months and 2 years. Most clients will come in for a touchup at around the 18 month mark to reapply the microblading pigment. There are many variables that can influence the endurance of the pigment, some of which are within an individual’s ability to control, some of which sadly aren’t.

Longevity Tips for Microbladed Brows

How to Get Lasting Results from Microblading.jpg

To keep your treated eyebrows in their best condition, it’s imperative that you follow the aftercare instructions your microblading artist gave you. These include:

  • Avoid sweating in the brow area in the week or so post-treatment. Intense, sweaty work outs, long hot showers, pools, hot tubs, and saunas, should all be avoided during the healing process

  • Stay out of direct sunlight in the aftermath of your microblading session. It is important that sun exposure is minimized during the healing process, and using SPF on the brows or covering the face with a hat or visor when you are out in the sun will help keep your brows looking fresh

  • It’s also strongly advised to avoid dyeing brows during the healing process after microblading. Any makeup deposited on the brows can interfere with the skin’s ability to seal in pigment.

  • If you smoke, it is a good idea to abstain in the week or so after your microblading, as chemicals in cigarettes and vapes can affect your skin’s ability to heal effectively.

  • Skin hydration is critical to its healing factor. The more hydrated your skin is, the faster and more effectively it will heal. Drink plenty of water.

After the initial healing period of microblading has passed, there are other factors that can contribute to how fast or slowly the pigment that has been locked into the skin fades over time.

If you have oily skin you will be given a specific aftercare protocol to help with pigment retention. You can expect less defined hair strokes with oilier skin types so a “powdered” or “ombre” approach may be better than microblading alone.

  • When you go out, make sure you are using sunscreen to protect your brows (and the rest of your face and neck!).

Adorn’s Guide to Creating the Perfect Eyebrow with Microblading

Screen Shot 2020-11-17 at 12.01.48 PM.png

Creating the perfect eyebrow with microblading is a delicate task. There are lots of factors to getting it right, and a misstep with any of them can change the whole effect you’re going for, add years to your face, or distort your expression. If you are dissatisfied with your natural brows, Adorn can provide microblading to change your appearance on a semi-permanent level. To make sure that your new eyebrow shape complements your face shape, the brow experts at Adorn offer some pointers.

Eyebrow Mapping

Here are some variables and terms that go into determining the ideal eyebrow shape. Remember, different shapes complement different faces, so brow mapping will necessarily vary for clients. Creating the perfect brow won’t be the same for everyone.

1. Arch Height

This term refers to how raised or lifted the bottom arch of the eyebrow is. The variations are straight, shallow, medium, or high.

2. Arch Shape

This references what the peak of the arch in the eyebrow is. The variations of shape are hard angle, soft angle, and round.

3. Thickness

One of the most easily identifiable elements of brow shape is thickness. Referred to in technical terms as thick, medium, or thin. Despite recent full and fluffy brow trends, many clients still prefer a thinner brow. All shapes and sizes can be beautiful!

4. Definition

This measures brows by how filled in/voluminous they are, and depending on the person, can be soft, medium, or full.

5. Length

Refers to how far the eyebrow is in between the bridge of the nose and temples. They may have extended, normal, or short tails.

How Do You Draw Perfect Eyebrows for Microblading?

While there’s not really a step-by-step guide that anyone with a brow pencil can follow at home to draw the set of eyebrows most complementary to your features, there are some broad guidelines to follow.

  • Follow a shape close to your natural eyebrows’ appearance: There are a series of measurements that a professional eyebrow artist will follow to achieve this: the outer corner of your eye, the edge of your nose, the depth of your eye, and more. In the case of people who lack permanent eyebrows, they will use your bone structure to measure. Of course, your eyebrow artist will make sure you approve before anything permanent is initiated.

  • Avoid overlong, short, curved, or flat shapes: The arch of your brow is crucial to avoiding an aged appearance around your brows with straight lines or overly-short shapes. Creating a flow that mirrors under the arch of your brow, and how it flows through to the end of your eyebrow tail is the best way to create a youthful look.

  • Choose appropriate color and proportionate strokes: Microblading isn’t like eyebrow pencil. It’s permanent makeup; once it’s under the skin, it’s there for 1-3 years. A skilled eyebrow artist will choose the best color for your eyebrows and apply the pigment in the right quantity and depth so as to imitate your natural eyebrow hair growth while creating new hair strokes to subtly reshape its appearance.

If you are interested in eyebrow microblading in the Bay Area, Adorn Cosmetic is available for a range of permanent makeup services such as medical tattooing, scalp micropigmentation, and facial hair tattoos.

Lip Lining and Lip Blushing

Permanent makeup for lips is a great way to create the look you have always wanted for your lips, without fillers or surgery. Permanent lip makeup procedures define your lips, without creating excessive volume or puffiness. Lip designs are created with a wide range of pigment and cosmetic colors, to match every shade of lip color. At Adorn Cosmetic, we specialize in Lip Lining and Lip Blushing for our Bay Area clients.

WHY PERMANENT MAKEUP FOR LIPS IS GAINING POPULARITY

Clients who choose lip lining or lip blushing service cite convenience as the #1 reason. Imagine never having to worry about these common makeup issues:

  • Your lipstick has worn off, smudged, or bled into the fine lines surrounding your mouth

  • You need to constantly re-apply lipstick throughout your day

  • Your lipstick has caked on your lips or smeared onto your teeth

  • You can never find that perfect shade of lipstick

Other Benefits of Permanent Lip Color:

  • Give your lips a fuller look

  • Add missing bow above your lip

  • Add shape to your mouth

  • Smooth vermillion edges by tattooing shape and defining border

  • Provides definition of colorless lips

Between these benefits, and the minimal downtime for results that last up to 2 years, it’s no wonder that permanent makeup for lips is so popular.

WHAT IS LIP LINING?

Permanent lip liner is a gentle form of tattoo for the lips. It outlines and shapes your lips for a fuller, but still natural look. Lip lining can also make your lips look younger, more symmetrical, better defined, and slightly more pigmented. And, you will no longer have to worry about dry lips, or color coming off when you kiss, eat, drink, or sleep!

Similar to permanent eyeliner and eyebrows, lip lining is a less drastic alternative to invasive procedures, such as Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma, and Perlane. To achieve the most appropriate color, various shades of pink are blended to match your natural tone. If you wish to achieve greater lip contour definition, a darker color can be selected for your lip liner procedure. With lip lining, you can look as if you’ve just applied a fresh coat of your favorite lipstick, all day every day!

IS LIP LINER TATTOO PAINFUL?

You might experience more pain with a lip tattoo compared with other areas of the body, such as an arm or leg tattoo. Keep in mind that pain thresholds vary from person to person. Before the procedure a topical numbing cream will be applied, after which most people experience an initial sensation similar to having eyebrows plucked. Once the skin has been opened, another numbing cream is applied which completely numbs the area. After both numbing agents have been applied all most people experience is pressure.

WHO IS THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR PERMANENT LIP LINER?

This treatment is best for a client who is ready to minimize the makeup routine. If you are used to wearing pencil, lipstick, and lip gloss, you may be a candidate for permanent lip liner. We also see clients who wish to correct lip asymmetries. Additionally, you may wish to consider lip lining if your lip color and definition have faded due to age.

WHAT IS LIP BLUSHING?

Lip blushing is a semi permanent tattooing method that enhances the beauty of natural lips. This treatment can correct asymmetry, add definition and fullness. We can also redefine your lip shape to create a new look. With the help of semi-permanent makeup, you can de-emphasize age lines around lips and correct fading color of the lips. Look younger, create the pout you’ve always wanted, or simply enjoy the convenience of a lipstick-free life.

HOW DOES LIP BLUSHING WORK?

A custom blended lip color is gently implanted via permanent makeup lip techniques. Brand new and sterilized equipment are used for each client, then disposed of properly. The color is customized for every client, therefore, you can be sure to achieve the desired effect.

The goal is to give lips life and a natural boost of color without being too dramatic. Pigment choice is important, as any blue, purple or brown undertones must be balanced with orange modifying pigments. We also consider your natural skin and lip tone

How to Look Your Best on Zoom Calls

How to Look Your Best on Zoom Calls.jpg

In the last few months Americans working from home have had to adapt to conducting all their business on video conferencing. There may not be a company out there whose profile has grown quite so exponentially in 2020 as Zoom. With the amount of people now working from home, video conferencing for family meetups, and having watch party video calls with friends, people are working a lot harder on making sure they come across well on webcam. Adorn Cosmetic is here to make the process easier, with some useful tips you can implement at home.

How to Look Good on Video Calls

A lot of what it takes to improve your appearance on Zoom is common sense. Here are some of the most straightforward steps you can take.

  • It’s important to cover the basics. Comb your hair, shave, or apply makeup, and think about what clothing you’ll wear. With the low resolution and framerate of most video conferences, busy plaid or patterned outfits will undermine your aesthetic and turn off viewers. Wear plain, solid colors, but avoid garments of bright white or dark black, as the camera picks them up in ways that make them appear like ‘blobs’ of color.

  • Proper lighting is essential. Make sure you have a lamp or other light source near your face to shed even, steady lighting. Don’t sidelight or backlight our face, and avoid sitting with your back to a window (you’ll be silhouetted by the window light). Facing the window will give you access to soft, people-friendly natural light. Lift your computer so that your camera is at eye level. This is the most flattering angle. You don’t want to be shooting from a low angle.

  • Gimmicky backgrounds can be fun, but ultimately you don’t want the other people in the call to be distracted by what’s behind you. Bookshelves are another popular choice, to make yourself look more scholarly and convey personality, but they also prove distracting on calls. A simple wall, or a wall with maybe one hanging art piece or photograph, can be an effective backdrop.

  • Socially distance from your camera. Many cameras are wide-angle, meaning that if you get too close, it will distort your features.

How Can I Look Good on Zoom at Night?

Nighttime presents more challenges for those in video chats, as the readiest source of good lighting is now unavailable. One solution, beloved of YouTubers and influencers with home studios, is the ring light. A suitable ring light can cost as little as $13 (plus batteries) and can make a world of difference to your video meetings, improving the appearance of your skin tone and overall boosting the color temperature of your video feed.

The Easiest Makeup to Look Good in Zoom Calls

How to Look Your Best on Zoom Calls 2.jpg

When it comes to doing makeup for Zoom meetings when you need to look your best, there are ways in which the format makes it easier, and ways that it makes it harder. The low resolution of the calls means that issues such as dark circles are less likely to show up, but at the same time, the different conditions mean that you are likely to look washed out and flattened on camera in ways you probably don’t in person. So, to make sure you’re looking camera ready for Zoom, the best way to prepare is to do your makeup looking into your webcam. It’s important to remember that your appearance in person will be different to how you look on camera, so this may not end up being a look that you’re happy leaving the house with.

  • Take a large brush and load it with bronzer, tap off the excess, then blend it across your cheeks and nose.

  • Apply more to your temples, the edges of your forehead, and over your eyelids. Check in the webcam to make sure it’s making a difference.

  • Then apply blush over your cheeks, nose, eyelids, and edges of the forehead. You can be liberal with the amount: it needs to show up on camera.

Subtleties that may show up on a celebrity makeup artist’s makeup tips video on YouTube or television are less likely to be apparent on a smaller, lower-resolution screen on people’s phones. That said, if you want to update your look with permanent makeup to make your routine easier on a day to day basis, Adorn Cosmetic is available to help you plan your new look. We offer permanent eyebrow makeup, permanent eyeliner or eyelash enhancement to save you curling your lashes, beard and facial hair tattoos, and tattoo doctoring.
